Petone attends the Nelson champs at Westport - 2012

Petone mustered sufficient members to slightly overfill an eleven seater van (a rental) to attend the 2012 Nelson champs held on the westport rifle range 23/24 March 2012.   Much predeployment planning was undertaken with the logistics coming together at the final hour.   Nine individuals travelled including one member from Upper Hutt (Casey) and one from Onslow (Kevin).   The vehicle was very full but our appointed load-master made short work of packing all the kit away with some leg room, but not a lot according to Eric.  The pick up and ferry trip was uneventful and relaxing.  Dinner at the Toot and Whistle then 4 hours to Westport through some pretty interesting South Island scenery.  Arrived at 10.30pm with a mad scamble to secure a bed with someone who doesn't snore or drink to all hours of the night, which no one did of course.  The accommodation was great, a Book-a-Bach secured by Jonno. Well done Jonno.

Day one dawned with rain and some more rain, bugger.  No one knew where the range actually was so this became the responsibility of the driver (Jonno).  The range just happened to be 5 minutes out of town on the main road.

The shooting is entirely a story on its own and I strongly suggest you read the results section of this site for a detailed report compiled by Anita.  Thank you Anita.

Rain was our constant companion for the weekend with all occupants of our vehicle all working together without a single argument, well done to all.  As a contingent Petone plus our guests from the outer Wellington two clubs shot their butts off over the weekend.   We secured the open and A grade champion AndrĂ© dropping only two points over the track with a bucket load of centrals.  Petone also secured second place in the club teams competition off concurrent scores.  Well done Petone.

Shooting from 700 yds was really interesting with only educated guesses as what the elevation and ring size should be.  But we all managed to hit the plate first shot.  Good guess work by all.

The Westport range forms part of the DOC estate and is managed by Trustees appointed by the local town authority I think.  Bernard Menzies the boss trustee visited the range both days and presented all the trophies.  The Westport range is used only once a year for the Nelson champs but most other weekends of the year by other shooters and groups according the Bernard.  What a fabulous range to shoot on and as it turns out a high scoring range.  The Nelson championship is often won with no points down.  Wow.
